Job description – Study Assistant, VCAPS study
Organisation: Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Vietnam
The Woolcock Institute is lung health research organisation, based at Sydney University, Australia (http://www.woolcock.org.au/). The Institute has operated in Vietnam since 2009, we undertake large and important operational and epidemiological and clinical research projects in collaboration with the National Tuberculosis Program in 11 Provinces, including Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Woolcock also runs training in epidemiological and operational research methods for Vietnamese doctors and public health workers.
Currently the Woolcock directly employs 50 full-time staff in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Ca Mau. We are substantially expanding our organization, as we prepare for the implementation of a major new public health study in 2017. We are recruiting a highly motivated and experienced Project Officer to participate in a sub project of an integrated health-sector strategy to combat COPD and asthma in Vietnam (V-CAPS) in 4 provinces Hanoi, HCM, Ca Mau and Thanh Hoa.
Location: Based in Hanoi
Duration: 12 months appointment, with consideration for subsequent extension.
Main roles: To participate in providing smoking cessation interventions, mostly as a counsellor in a quitline centre to provide counselling service to participating smokers
Report to: VCAPS Study Manager, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, and, through this person to the Chief Investigators of the study and Dr Thu Anh Nguyen, the Country Director
Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in relevant training course and workshop related to VCAPS and smoking cessation, to learn and fully understand the study protocols and procedures
- Contribute to planning and executing the call centre service for smoking cessation support
- Implementing call centre counselling for smokers who intend to quit smoking, ensure that the protocol is strictly followed
- Record data completely and accurately as required
- Perform data filing correctly and completely
- Maintaining facilities and equipment as required for implementing call centre service
- Taking part in training as a co-trainer to provide support on smoking cessation for VCAPS site staff when needed.
- Report to the Study manager the call centre implementation as required.
- Assisting in the evaluation of the Standard Operating Procedures, study documentation and forms, and promotion materials of VCAPS and in smoking cessation part in particular
- Work with partners to recruit target group/participants into the study as needed
- Create and maintain relations with partners for Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in general and in the field
- Communicate and report any issues occurred in implementation timely with the study manager for solutions
- Participate in report development by providing comments and inputs.
- Other duties if required.

Qualifications
- University degree in Public Health, Pharmacy or health-related field OR University degree in Social Work, Psychology or social science related field
- At least 1 year of working experience in the field of public health, social work or related fields interacting with human subjects
- Experience in quantitative and qualitative research
- Experience in engaging with government and/or non-government partners
