Technical Advisor, Protected Area Management, Carbi Project

WWF-Greater Mekong (GM) – on the ground in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam – is working to conserve the region’s biodiversity and build a secure and sustainable future for people and wildlife.

WWF-Greater Mekong is seeking an experienced Technical Advisor, Protected Area Management for our Carbi Project who will lead the Protected Area component of the project, covering the Quang Nam and Thua Thien Hue Saola Nature Reserves as well as the Bach Ma National Park extension in Vietnam, and the Xe Sap National Park in Laos. This position involves the development and implementation of management systems for the Protected Areas (PA). The Technical Advisor will be responsible for coordination of the project activities and budget across the PA landscape, ensuring synergy and continuity. The position has a strong focus on capacity building and mentoring of WWF, government and partner staff. Monitoring and evaluation of outputs against actual outcomes also forms a key component of this position.

Base location: Vientiane, Lao PDR or Hue, Vietnam

Key requirements:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in conservation, natural resource management, wildlife management, or similar.
  • 5 years practical experience as Manager or Technical Advisor in large scale protected areas
  • Extensive experience in the management of community-based conservation projects, development of forums and maintenance of cooperation agreements;
  • Excellent knowledge around key conservation activities such as enforcement, monitoring, baseline data management, fire management, etc.; 
  • Proven understanding of issues in protected area management and working knowledge of policy/institutional context in protected area management in the Mekong region;
  • Experience in leading teams based in different countries;
  • Proficiency in the use of data management systems for protected areas (especially spatial data software such as GIS and MIST systems)
  • Report writing and data analysis
  • Coaching and capacity building/development
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
