Digital transformation holds great potential for achieving the 2030 Agenda in terms of environmental and climate goals. It is estimated that digital technologies can help reduce global greenhouse gas production by up to 20%. At the same time, a green digital transformation is needed, as digital technologies also contribute to climate change: Currently, over 2% of global CO2 emissions are attributed to digitalization.

On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ is to implement the project “Twin Transition Hub: Digitalization and Innovation for Climate and Environmental Protection” in Vietnam. The project supports the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment and the private sector in implementing the Twin Transition. In this project, the private sector will be empowered to utilize digital technologies for achieving both business outcomes as well as climate and environmental protection goals.

The project is part of the Sustainable Economic Development cluster of GIZ Viet Nam. Close cooperation with projects in this cluster and with the Energy and Environment clusters is required, as is a continuous contribution to the portfolio development of the cluster and GIZ in Viet Nam.

The project is looking for a local qualified candidates to fill the following position:

Textile Technology Specialist
Duty station: Ho Chi Minh City
Duration: 2 years contract starting from 15. February 2025

Main responsibilities:

  • Implementing daily operational aspects of all issues related to technology for textile/leather SMEs
  • Advising on technology usage to help SMEs achieve business outcomes (reduced costs, efficiency gains) and climate goals (circular economy, energy efficiency, etc.)
  • Conceptually linking textile/leather technology to energy efficiency, sustainable energy usage, circular economy and other forms of sustainable resource usage
  • Technical advice and organizational development for the clients (textile/leather SMEs) of the project in the field of digitalization
  • Designing activities for SME sensitization, SME trainings, Train-The-Trainer, and other forms of technical assistance for textile/leather SMEs
  • Strategic partnership development in the South of Vietnam on textile/leather and other topics of sustainable economic development
  • Knowledge management within GIZ Viet Nam, regional GIZ officers, the GIZ headquarters as well as outside the GIZ on the topic of climate-neutral textile/leather technologies
  • Monitoring and evaluation of activities, specifically for helping SMEs measure energy and resource consumption
  • Strategic communication to donors, network partners, beneficiaries, and the general public
  • Procuring and managing contractors to deliver the designed activities
  • Working closely with finance mangers to handle procurement and invoicing
  • Ensuring operations planning is on track and managing the project implementation
  • Communicating closely with our ministry partner to align on activities, timelines, selection criteria
  • Setting up and managing SME digitalization support programs for textile/leather SMEs
  • Establishing and promoting regional and German-Vietnamese digital SME networks, exchange with regional networks, organizing and facilitating learning journeys (regionally and internationally) on the topic of technologies for textile/leather SMEs

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in textile engineering and technology, environmental science, digital transformation, computer science, or equivalent with at least 3 years (for project officers) or 5 years (for senior project officers) working in the field of textile engineering and technology
  • Experience to implementing technologies for textile/leather businesses in Vietnam (overseas is a plus), such as proposing digital transformation strategies for enterprises, roadmap development, etc.
  • Experience in linking business outcomes (reduced costs, efficiency gains) with climate goals (climate-neutrality, reducing energy and resource usage)
  • Experience in conducting energy audits and environmental impact assessments for   manufacturing companies
  • Experience in setting up, maintaining and monitoring carbon accounting systems and systems to monitori resource systems (such as waste water management systems, etc.)
  • Experience in communications and employee engagement linked to the adoption of textile/leather solutions
  • Experience in developing strategies, setting up and executing transformation initiatives in textile/leather SMEs
  • Knowledge on current local and regional developments in the fields of technologies, solutions, as well as cost-benefit analysis for textile/leather SMEs
  • Experience managing external IT vendors;
  • Good knowledge of the Vietnamese and stakeholders in the digital transformation landscape in Vietnam, especially in the South of Vietnam
  • Experience to work with international donors is a plus
  • Willingness to travel (abroad and domestically) regularly
  • Managerial and organisational competence

  • Very good knowledge of Vietnamese and English, German and other languages is a plus
  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management
