Vietnamese Bear Team Manager - Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre

Join a dedicated team in the rehabilitation and ongoing care of rescued Asiatic black and Malayan sun bears at Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.

Due to an exciting department restructure, a highly motivated, experienced, and compassionate Vietnamese professional is sought to step up to the role of Bear Team Manager.

Note: a new, dedicated one-to-one English/Vietnamese translator is being created to support this role. Bear Team Manager candidates who have existing English language abilities will be considered favorably, as will candidates who express a willingness to work on developing English fluency once in the role.

The Bear Team Manager is responsible for overseeing teams of bear care staff involved in the daily husbandry and management of rescued bears. The Bear Team Manager works closely with the Bear and Vet Team Director, Senior Bear Team Manager, other Bear Team Managers, Bear Team Supervisors and the veterinary team to manage various daily operations.

The Bear Team Manager reports directly to the Senior Bear Team Manager.

All applicants will be judged on; interview, current work performance, their last three evaluations.

The successful candidate will start in February, 2021. However, will be involved in recruitment for a translator toward the end of 2020.

Responsibilities

  • Co-coordinating various daily operations:
    • Animal care and management;
    • Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs;
    • Ordering stock as required;
    • Maintaining bear behavior records & databases.
  • Operant conditioning and formal bear training programmes for a variety of medical, behavioural and management requirements.
  • Report writing, including producing material used by the Communications Team for social media and the Animals Asia website.
  • Human resources:
    • Capacity building and training with the local bear care team;
    • Staff evaluations;
    • Ensuring morale is maintained within bear care staff;
    • Identifying and addressing HR issues with the Bear & Vet Team Director as they arise.
  • As needed:
    • Overseeing the quarantine of newly rescued bears;
    • Participating in the hand-rearing and care of newly rescued orphan cubs.
    • Managing the integration of bears into mixed sex, social groups.

Requirements

  • At least five years work of direct husbandry/behavioural management experience at the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.
  • Ability to manage own time effectively and prioritise tasks.
  • Computer literacy, including Excel.
  • Strong managementskills and the ability to work both in a team and independently.
  • A good sense of humor and excellent communication skills.
  • Patience and willingness to work with colleagues from different cultures are essential.
  • Translator support will be included in the position, therefore fluency in English, while an advantage, is not a strict requirement for the position.
