40% of New HIV Cases in Vietnam among Individuals Aged 15-25: Agency

Nearly 40% of new HIV cases in Vietnam are among individuals aged 15-25, with many still in school, the Ministry of Health’s HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Department announced.

The agency issued a warning during a press conference on November 18, marking National Action Month for HIV/AIDS Prevention and World AIDS Day on December 1.

About 70% of these new cases are concentrated in the Mekong Delta, Southeast regions, and Ho Chi Minh City.

UNAIDS Country Director Raman Hailevich reported that new HIV infections in Vietnam have decreased by 60% since 2010, surpassing both the Asia-Pacific regional average and the global decline of 39%.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain, including the increasing incidence among younger populations, a lack of awareness about HIV, and ongoing stigma and discrimination, which hinder access to services, he added.

Vietnam has conducted over two million HIV tests, provided ARV treatment to over 176,000 patients, and maintained methadone treatment for over 46,500 individuals in a bid to control HIV/AIDS. (Suc Khoe Doi Song)
