Experts Warn of Increased Dengue Risk amid Weather Changes in Vietnam

Seasonal weather transitions have created favorable conditions for respiratory infections and disease-carrying agents to thrive, particularly the Aedes mosquito, which transmits dengue fever, in Vietnam, said experts.

Experts note that climate change has intensified extreme weather patterns, such as La Niña, leading to unseasonal rainfall and high humidity, which are ideal conditions for the proliferation of disease vectors, especially mosquitoes.

During a discussion on effective dengue prevention measures held in late 2024, Associate Professor-Dr. Vu Sinh Nam, senior advisor on dengue at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology and General Secretary of the Vietnam Preventive Medicine Association, identified four key obstacles in combating dengue fever in Vietnam, namely climate change, increased trade and travel, urbanization, and the lack of a specific treatment.

According to the Department of Disease Control, Ho Chi Minh City recorded 4,213 dengue fever cases in the first two months of 2025, a 125.3% increase from the same period in 2024, despite the dry season. Meanwhile, northern Vietnam also reported concerning figures, with Hanoi recording 137 cases during a cold spell in early 2025. (Suc Khoe Doi Song)
