The number of new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths in Vietnam has significantly decreased, but the rate of decline has slowed in recent years, with certain provinces and younger populations experiencing a rise in cases, said Deputy Director of the Ministry of Health’s Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) Vo Hai Son.
HIV transmission through sexual contact, particularly among men who have sex with men, remains the primary cause of new infections in Vietnam, Mr. Son added.
Of the total 230,000 people diagnosed and aware of their HIV status, only about 190,000 are undergoing treatment, leaving 40,000 untreated.
In 2024, over 70,000 people accessed HIV prevention services using antiretroviral (ARV) medications. However, it is estimated that 400,000 individuals need to utilize these services to effectively curb new infections. (Suc Khoe Doi Song)
