On March 18, UNICEF and WHO issued a joint statement commending Vietnam’s swift and decisive measures to tackle the ongoing measles outbreak, local media reported.
Recent data from both organizations indicate a continued surge in cases across central and northern Vietnam, including new outbreaks in previously unaffected areas.
With reported fatalities and a projected rise in cases, UNICEF and WHO recommend a nationwide vaccination campaign to ensure at-risk children receive timely immunization. They also emphasize the need to supply essential treatment, including vitamin A, to hospitals and healthcare facilities, especially in remote areas.
Following the Prime Minister’s directive, overseen by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long, authorities will expand immunization efforts and boost vaccine supply, aiming for both routine immunization and large-scale outbreak response. A national online conference on March 15, chaired by Health Minister Dao Hong Lan, underscored the government’s commitment to addressing public health challenges.
UNICEF and WHO support the Health Ministry’s call for prioritizing resources, enhancing public communication, and accelerating immunization efforts. Both organizations reaffirm their commitment to assisting Vietnam in outbreak control, measles elimination strategies, targeted vaccination outreach, and strengthening vaccine procurement and cold chain systems.
