Vietnam performed 9,516 organ transplants from 1992 to 2024, with over 1,000 procedures conducted annually in recent years, placing the country at the forefront of organ transplantation in Southeast Asia, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan announced at a year-end reviewing conference on January 7.
In 2024, 41 cases of organ donation from brain-dead individuals were recorded, marking a national record, he said.
The deputy minister also highlighted 2024 as the year of groundbreaking medical advancements, including Vietnam’s first simultaneous heart-liver transplant and a tracheal transplant from a brain-dead donor, which is a globally rare procedure.
Furthermore, the transplantation sector further recorded three successful lung transplants in 2024, bringing the total to 12 since 2017.
Mr. Thuan asked the health sector to improve the policy on organ donation and transplantation, strengthen the implementation of information technology solutions, and promote digital transformation in the management of the registration system and transplant waiting list in 2025. (Suc Khoe Doi Song)
