Vietnam Explores Carbon Market Ties with New Zealand, Switzerland at COP29

On the sidelines of the COP29 in Azerbaijan, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh has met with New Zealand’s Minister of Climate Change and Minister of Revenue Simon Watts and Swiss Ambassador for the Environment Felix Wertli to advance the carbon market cooperation, state media reported.

At the meeting, Mr. Simon Watts highlighted New Zealand’s expertise in emissions trading  and proposed incorporating carbon credit exchange into a  bilateral cooperation agreement set for 2025. He noted that emission reduction in the agricultural industry may be prioritized for collaboration, given both countries’ strengths in the field.

The two sides also mentioned the potential for cooperation in climate change, proposing to set up a dialogue on climate change and technical collaboration in carbon credit trading, among others.

Discussions with Switzerland centered around cooperation in climate change response, especially the development of the carbon credit market.

Mr. Felix Wertli said that Switzerland has worked with Vietnamese agencies to select potential projects for pilot carbon credit programs, such as biogas and electric vehicles. He hoped the two sides could reach an agreement on carbon credit trading to set a foundation for a roadmap.

Vietnam sought Switzerland’s experience in building a bilateral carbon exchange framework and asked the Swiss side to make a specific proposal on carbon credit trading between the two nations. (Bao Tai Nguyen Moi Truong, Bao Tai Nguyen Moi Truong 1)
