Vietnamese General Secretary To Lam outlined three significant proposals to advance education during a meeting in Hanoi on November 18 to mark the upcoming Teachers’ Day, state media reported.
He emphasized education’s role as a national priority and urged reforms targeting modern teaching approaches and global competitiveness.
The General Secretary called for a focus on human development through practical education and critical thinking, with goals to rank among ASEAN’s top three for international research output by 2030 and have a university in the global top 100. He highlighted the need for real-world learning over theory-heavy curricula.
Mr. Lam also stressed immediate measures for the educational sector, including eradicating illiteracy, launching a nationwide digital literacy campaign, and addressing school shortages in cities.
The top leader stressed the need for a minimum allocation of 20% of the state budget for education, alongside strategies to attract private sector investment.
Addressing workforce issues, he urged efforts to address teacher shortages, attract talent, develop leading scientists and educators, and build a healthy learning environment.
While acknowledging achievements like universal preschool access and growing international research publications, General Secretary Lam pointed out inefficiencies such as theory-heavy curricula, unemployed graduates, and insufficient educational infrastructure in major cities.
