On November 13, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Lien Huong chaired a meeting with UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam Ramla Khalidi and WHO Representative in Vietnam Dr. Angela Pratt to discuss addressing air pollution in Vietnam, local media reported.
During the meeting in Hanoi, the UNDP and WHO presented a draft plan outlining joint efforts to support the Vietnamese government’s initiatives to combat air pollution. The goal is to ensure clean air for all by strengthening air quality management and increasing public involvement in mitigating air pollution impacts.
Proposed areas of cooperation will focus on developing a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework for air quality management.
Deputy Minister Huong agreed with the proposals and tasked the Department of Environmental Health to work with relevant agencies to align efforts with UNDP and WHO. This will include organizing a national conference and signing a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE).
She also requested additional research from UNDP and WHO to better understand common health issues linked to Vietnam’s environmental characteristics.
Regarding the global conference in Colombia in March 2025, the Ministry of Health expressed readiness to attend, learn from international experiences, and explore potential solutions, including monitoring systems and intersectoral cooperation models that could be adapted for Vietnam.
