Vietnam’s government has approved the creation of 61 new nature reserves as part of the National Biodiversity Conservation Plan, signed by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on November 8.
The Plan, which covers 2021 to 2030, aims to expand protection for critical ecosystems, wildlife, and rare genetic resources across Vietnam. With a long-term vision for 2050, the conservation efforts aim to restore and effectively manage endangered species and natural ecosystems.
The conservation strategy will transition 178 existing nature reserves, including upgrading seven and expanding 27, to cover a total of 6.6 million hectares. Additionally, seven biodiversity corridors and ten wetlands will be designated as nationally important sites.
The Plan calls for the establishment of 22 high-biodiversity zones totaling around two million hectares and ten ecological landscapes covering four million hectares to protect rare species and sustain natural habitats essential for biodiversity.
The government has outlined eight main strategies, including financial support, policy frameworks, capacity building, public education, and international cooperation. (Nong Nghiep, Bao Chinh Phu, thiennhienmoitruong.vn)
