Vietnam is set to initiate the World Bank (WB)-funded project to upgrade National Highways 53, 62, and 91B in the Mekong Delta region in 2026, the Ministry of Transport said in its response to authorities in Long An province.
The ministry has completed a pre-feasibility study for the project and submitted it to the prime minister for approval.
Once completed in 2027, these upgraded highways will improve regional connectivity, facilitating transportation and boosting tourism across Long An, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Can Tho, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, and Bac Lieu.
The Mekong Delta region contributes 50% of paddy production, 95% of rice exports, nearly 65% of aquaculture, 60% of exported fish, and almost 70% of the country’s fruits. However, poor road, waterway, and maritime infrastructure have hindered the region from reaching its full economic potential. (Bao Giao Thong)
