Vietnam is seeking Japan’s assistance in transferring technology and solutions to address climate change challenges, particularly in meteorology, landslides, and flash floods, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha said.
During a meeting with a delegation of Japanese meteorological experts led by former Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Hiroshi Fukada in Hanoi on December 2, Deputy PM Ha praised the collaborative projects and pilot programs in Vietnam within these fields and urged Japanese experts and businesses to develop more specific initiatives.
The deputy prime minister called on Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to work with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Weathernews Inc. to pilot additional radar installations. These initiatives aim to refine technical expertise and establish cooperative mechanisms to enhance bilateral hydrometeorological collaboration.
Highlighting the shared vulnerability of Vietnam and Japan to natural disasters, Mr. Fukada emphasized the importance of robust infrastructure and swift, accurate forecasting to issue timely warnings.
A representative from Weathernews Inc. noted that under a voluntary cooperation program with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Japanese government and the company had provided Vietnam with X-band eagle radars. These systems improve observation, forecasting, and early warning capabilities for severe weather events such as typhoons, heavy rains, and flash floods, reducing disaster risks for Vietnamese communities. The company expressed its intention to further enhance radar data utilization in Vietnam, aiming to boost forecast accuracy and disaster preparedness. (Tin Tuc, media.chinhphu.vn)
