Vietnam Strengthens Policies to Promote Organ Donation, Transplantation

The Vietnamese Ministry of Health is implementing various measures to improve policies and mechanisms that promote organ donation and transplantation, local media reported.

A key effort includes refining technical guidelines and establishing economic and technical standards for transplant procedures. Notably, the ministry has issued new legal documents, such as Circular 48, which regulates organ transplant registration and the coordination of post-mortem donations to encourage and streamline the process.

Digital transformation is also playing a crucial role in optimizing organ allocation. Authorities have mandated hospitals to establish transplant waiting lists and adopt information technology for organ coordination, ensuring transparency in the process.

According to the National Coordination Center for Organ Transplantation, since the country’s first kidney transplant in 1992, Vietnam had performed 9,089 organ transplants as of August 2024. With over 1,000 transplants conducted annually, including approximately 100 liver and 90 heart transplants, Vietnam ranks first in Southeast Asia in transplant volume, trailing only developed nations such as Spain.
