The Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Committees at all levels in the southern province of Tien Giang have collaborated with agencies and organizations to speed up social security programs, aiming to reduce the province’s poverty rate to 0.87% this year, said Vice President of the provincial VFF Committee Huynh Van Hai.
The province’s poverty rate now stands at 0.97%, with more than 600 poor households in need of housing support.
This year, the VFF Committees at all levels in Tien Giang are planning to help about 490 households escape from poverty, thus reducing the province’s poverty rate to 0.87%.
According to Hai, since the beginning of this year, the provincial VFF Committee has received nearly VND422 billion ($16.72 million) donated by organizations and individuals.
Of the sum, nearly VND15 billion has been spent to build and repair houses for nearly 300 poor households. Meanwhile, nearly VND45 billion was spent to provide medical support for over 1.3 million people and nearly VND44 billion was spent as preferential loans for over 3,900 turns of poor households.
Hai said that in the coming time, the VFF Committees at all levels in the province will step up communications, calling for support to poor households.
The committees will focus on improve public awareness about sustainable poverty reduction, increase public engagement in poverty reduction programs, particularly the program on eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses.
While expanding models and projects on supporting the poor, the province encourages each agency, organization or association to support at least one poor household to escape poverty sustainably.
Departments, agencies and localities were urged to implement practical activities for the poor such as providing free food, free clothes or preferential loans.
