Vietnam Urges AI Camera System to Strengthen Mineral Extraction Oversight

Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has proposed implementing an AI-powered camera system to monitor mineral extraction and minimize resource loss, part of a draft circular outlining the implementation of the Geology and Mineral Law, local media reported.

Accordingly, the ministry suggests requiring mining companies to install smart cameras at strategic locations to track mineral transportation.

In addition, electronic weighing systems would be integrated with the camera network and a centralized data system to ensure real-time monitoring. The collected data, including extracted and processed mineral volumes, would be transmitted daily to local environmental authorities.

The initiative addresses ongoing concerns about illegal mining and resource mismanagement, which have led to legal actions against several companies. The ministry also aims to strengthen enforcement beyond the current reliance on periodic self-reported data. (Kinh Te Moi Truong, VnExpress)
