Vietnam has dropped to a low English proficiency level globally in 2024, ranking 63rd out of 116 countries with a score of 498, according to Education First’s (EF) latest English Proficiency Index report released on November 13.
This ranking places Vietnam eighth in Asia, trailing behind other regional countries such as Singapore (609 points), the Philippines (570 points), and Malaysia (566 points).
Despite recent improvements, no Vietnamese regions or cities scored in the high or very high proficiency categories, with top cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City only reaching mid-level scores of around 524 points.
Vietnam’s descent to the low-proficiency category ends a two-year climb, where it achieved a medium proficiency level in both 2022 and 2023.
The EF report also highlighted a global trend of decreasing English proficiency, marking the fourth year of decline. (Dan Tri, Giao Duc Thoi Dai, VTC News, Tien Phong, VietnamNet, VnExpress, lifestyle.znews.vn, Nhan Dan, PLO, NLD, Thanh Nien, nguonluc.com.vn)
