Vietnam’s Fertility Rate among Five Lowest in Southeast Asia: Health Ministry

Vietnam’s fertility rate has fallen to 1.91 children per woman, ranking among the five lowest in Southeast Asia, according to the Ministry of Health.

While the regional average is 2.0, Vietnam’s rate is only higher than Brunei (1.8), Malaysia (1.6), and Thailand and Singapore (both 1.0).

After remaining stable at around 2.1 from 1999 to 2022, the fertility rate has dropped sharply in recent years, from 1.96 in 2023 to 1.91 in 2024, the lowest on record. This marks the third consecutive year below replacement level, raising concerns about long-term demographic and economic impacts.

Despite 2024 being the Year of the Dragon, traditionally an auspicious time for childbirth, the decline suggests cultural beliefs are no longer a major factor in family planning.

Vietnam’s Politburo has directed the Central Inspection Commission to amend the 2022 guideline to end disciplinary action against party members who have a third child or more.  (VnExpress English)
