Tidal surges forecast for late January are expected to cause flooding in several Mekong Delta provinces in Vietnam, namely Long An, Ben Tre, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Bac Lieu, Tien Giang, Kien Giang, and Hau Giang, according to the Vietnam Mekong River Commission.
The commission projected that rainfall across the Mekong basin in January will reach only 5%-10% of the annual average. It also forecast that upstream areas will experience a further decline in rainfall levels.
Besides, dry-season river flows in 2025 have already decreased significantly, leading to heightened saline intrusion into inland areas.
Experts recommended monitoring salinity updates and utilizing water storage facilities in canal systems to mitigate the impact. (Vietnam Plus)
