Vietnam’s MoH Proposes Ending Third-Child Restrictions to Boost Birth Rates

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health is drafting a proposal to remove disciplinary measures against public servants and Party members for having a third child, as birth rates continue to decline, said Director General of the health ministry’s Population Department Le Thanh Dung.

If the proposal allowing couples to have more than two children is approved, individuals will have greater autonomy over family planning, which may help mitigate declining replacement fertility rates, Mr. Dung explained.

The health ministry’s report highlighted Vietnam’s record-low fertility rate, which is projected to fall to 1.91 children per woman in 2024, with further declines being expected in the coming years. (PLO, Xay Dung Chinh Sach, ANTD)
