10,000 Vietnamese Register as Organ Donors following Prime Minister's Appeal

Two weeks after the call on May 19 by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, nearly 10,000 people in Vietnam have voluntarily registered as organ donors, local media reported.

Professor Dr. Dong Van He, director of the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation, under the Ministry of Health, stated that among them are thousands of healthcare workers serving in hospitals across the country.

Most recently, on May 31, the Central Military Hospital 108 launched the program "Register for organ donation to save lives - Giving is eternal," with around 100 people participating, including the hospital director, doctors, nurses, and hospital staff.

Vietnam has so far thousands of people who have donated organs and tissues, with more than 86,000 individuals registered as organ donors after passing away.

Compared to many culturally similar countries in the region, the rate of people registering for organ donation in Vietnam remains low. The rate of organ and tissue donation from individuals who are brain dead in Vietnam is also low, with 94% of organ donors being living donors.
