2K Children Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in Vietnam's District Hospitals

Nearly 2,000 children in Vietnam have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, experts have quoted data from district-level hospitals as saying.

They announced the information during a training program on implementing Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes in Children and Adolescents, organized by the Ministry of Health’s Department of Medical Service Administration on June 24.

Assoc. Prof. Tran Minh Dien, president of the Vietnam Pediatric Association and director of the National Children's Hospital, stated that in recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the number of children diagnosed with diabetes, with hundreds seeking medical consultation and treatment at his hospital every year.

However, currently in Vietnam, only a few large hospitals such as the National Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital 1, and Hue Central Hospital manage this group of children, he pointed out, suggesting expanding the management system for this patient group to more healthcare facilities, even allowing small units to manage 15-20 patients each, in order to alleviate the burden on tertiary hospitals.
