32 Int’l Organizations Grant $25M to Vietnam’s Central Storm-hit Victims

As many as 32 international organizations have granted $25 million to Vietnam’s central storm-hit region to help locals deal with natural disasters, state media reported. The information was revealed at the meeting of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) on December 16. Reviewing the international support for Vietnam’s natural disaster in 2020, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep highlighted the humanitarian value in the work of international organizations by the aid as well as praised the effective operation of the Disaster Risk Reduction Partnership (DRRP). For his part, Mr. Andrew Jeffries, country director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and DRRP chairman, informed that the ADB and members of the DRRP have visited affected localities and offered technical and financial assistance to locals. The ADB will continue to join hands with Vietnam in preventing and controlling natural disasters and their risks, he said. The central region in Vietnam was hit directly by eight storms, two tropical depressions, and two historical floods in the last three months. They caused 249 deaths and missing while left economic losses of over VND30 trillion ($1.3 billion).
