500K Ha Cleared of Landmines, Explosive Remnants in One Decade: VNMAC

Over the past decade, nearly 500,000 hectares of land have been cleared of landmines and explosive remnants, the Vietnam National Mine Action Center (VNMAC) announced during a ceremony commemorating the tenth anniversary and the presentation of the Third-Class Fatherland Protection Medal on March 4 in Hanoi.

During the ceremony, Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army and deputy head of the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee on Post-war Mine and Toxic Chemical Consequences in Vietnam, urged the center to carry out several tasks effectively. The focus includes intensifying research, analysis, and forecasting of international and domestic situations related to mine clearance efforts.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration with relevant agencies to develop plans for mine clearance efforts from 2026 to 2045, with a vision extending to 2050.

Earlier on March 4, 2014, former Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed a decision to establish the VNMAC, an organization under the direct guidance of the Prime Minister and managed by the Ministry of National Defense.
