73.8K Vietnamese Ethnic Women Receive $6M in Total Aid upon Giving Birth

Some 73,775 disadvantaged ethnic women across 53 localities in Vietnam received VND147.5 billion ($6.36 million) in cash assistance when giving birth between June 2015 and September 30, 2020, in accordance to the population policy, under the Government’s Decree 39, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH). Each female was aided with VND2 million for only one time. During the past five years, there were 1,176 persons got VND2.35 billion in total aid regardless of violations against the population policy, the ministry said, adding that VND1.42 billion were recalled. Deputy Health Minister Do Xuan Tuyen said in the time ahead, relevant agencies need to promote the implementation of Decree 39, improve population quality via pre-marital screening, curb child and consanguineous marriage, and take care of children in their first 1,000 days of life.
