AFD Finances over EUR1B for Vietnam to Battle Climate Change So Far: Official

The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) by far has funded more than EUR1 billion ($1.13 billion) for Vietnam to run 30 projects and programs on climate change response, said Director of the agency in Vietnam Fabrice Richy. Until now, Vietnam has complied with commitments to the Paris Agreement with the aim to reduce at least 8% of greenhouse gases by 2030, said the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Vietnam is actively working with the World Bank, the United Nations, and the Asian Development Bank, as well as other international organizations to use both technology and human resources to finish all proposed goals related to climate change. Taking southern Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) as an example, Director of the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Toan Thang said the city will work with C40 Cities Organization to ease impacts of climate change and collaborate with the Netherlands in programs about water resource management, urban flooding control. In addition, HCMC is set to join the Japanese city of Osaka to launch projects using the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
