APEC Members Attend Conference in Hanoi on Investment in Clean Energy

A two-day conference on intensifying investment in clean energy within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum 2016 is taking place in Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi with the aim of reducing energy consumption in the region by 45% by 2035. Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade jointly organizes the event titled APEC Public-Private Dialogue on Promoting Trade and Investment in Renewable and Clean Energy to end on Sept 14. APEC members have discussed measures to promote the cooperation between the government and businesses in each country and among nations for further investment in renewable energy. Vietnam together with other partners proposed measures to enhance cooperation in experience sharing, financial and technical support, and policy making in Asia-Pacific. Nguyen Cam Tu, Vietnamese deputy minister of Industry and Trade, said at the event that developing renewable energy becomes indispensable for Vietnam as the country will turn to be the energy importer from 2017 when it operates several coal-fired plants. From now to 2020, Vietnam will add nearly 7,000 megawatts to the power grid, mainly from coal-fired and gas-fueled power plants. Developing clean energy is part of the country’s efforts to fulfil its commitments to reduce by 8% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. (Baocongthuong.com.vn Sept 14)
