Doctors Perform First Kidney Transplant in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Region

Over 20 doctors at Can Tho Central General Hospital have successfully performed the first kidney transplant in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region after four years of preparation, local media reported.

The transplant took place on April 25 and the hospital announced it on May 9 after the patient's health stabilized. The recipient is a 34-year-old male patient, a teacher from Ben Tre province, who had been suffering from chronic kidney disease for six years and undergoing internal medicine treatment. The donor was the patient's brother.

This first kidney transplant in the Mekong Delta was conducted in five hours with support from doctors at Ho Chi Minh City-based Cho Ray Hospital. The cost of the transplant surgery was VND270 million ($11,250).

With this achievement, Can Tho Central General Hospital has become the 26th kidney transplant center in Vietnam. The hospital aims to perform one kidney transplant every month and establish a fund for kidney donation and transplantation for the people.
