EU to Support Vietnam's Green Transport Transition: Ambassador

The European Union (EU) will support Vietnam in promoting a green transition and sustainable development, particularly in the railway sector, EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier said at a working session with Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang in Hanoi on June 19.

Ambassador Julien Guerrier highlighted the EU's Global Gateway initiative, which aims to mobilize EUR300 billion by 2027 for investments in key sectors like transport, climate, and energy.

Through the Global Gateway initiative, the EU plans to support Vietnam in achieving its net-zero emissions goal by 2050. Vietnam will benefit from resilient and sustainable transport infrastructure projects, including roads, railways, maritime, inland waterways, and aviation.

Specifically, the EU will support Vietnam through a group approach, involving the EU, member countries, and financial institutions, focusing on infrastructure, especially railways. Both sides need to continue discussions to realize these collaborations.

Currently, aid agencies and financial institutions such as the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD) are very interested in and have supported the development of urban railway lines in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as other transport projects.

In his part, Minister Thang emphasized the need for continued cooperation to achieve Vietnam's COP26 commitments and sought EU assistance for technical projects to renovate railway lines and transition to clean energy.

In the maritime sector, he proposed enhanced cooperation between the EU and Vietnam, including studying the feasibility of establishing a green shipping route connecting major Vietnamese ports with European ports such as Antwerp and Rotterdam.
