France Supports Vietnam in Climate Change Response: Ambassador

French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet affirmed his government’s support for Vietnam in the fight against climate change at a meeting with Vietnamese Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh in Hanoi on January 29, local media reported.

The French government pledged to assist Vietnam to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and implement the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), among others, Mr. Brochet noted.

At the meeting, Director of the French Development Agency (AFD) Herve Conan expressed the hope to expand partnerships with Vietnamese partners in the deployment of the JETP resource mobilization plan, the building of financial instruments for the carbon market, biodiversity conservation, and ocean protection.

For his part, Minister Khanh called on the French government to help Vietnam with environmental protection, climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and natural ecosystem recovery by training manpower, transferring scientific and technological advances, and providing technical and financial support. He affirmed that the French Government and AFD are always important partners of Vietnam in the fields.

Via AFD, the French government is providing over EUR500 million ($541.4 million) in aid to help Vietnam carry out climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and marine pollution prevention projects.
