Hanoi Plans to Build $370M Waste Treatment Plant under PPP Model

Authorities in Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi have planned to build a waste treatment plant costing VND7.9 trillion ($370 million) to be built under the public-private partnership (PPP) model to ease environmental pollution. With capacity of 4,000 tons per day, the facility is expected to treat the city’s waste load of more than 7,000 tons/day, the online Dau Tu newspaper reported. The plant is part of Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex located in Hanoi’s outlying district of Soc Son. Pham Van Khanh, director of Hanoi’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said that the local waste treatment capacity would overload in the next five years and the plant would help ease the situation. The municipal Department of Construction proposed the project to be conducted under the build-lease-transfer (BLT) basis. Vietnam discharges around 15 million tons of solid waste per year. The majority of them were disposed at uncontrolled open dumping sites. Solid waste collection ability could only serve 70% of the urban population. (Baodautu.vn Oct 20)
