JICA to Support Vietnam to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) has approved a joint project with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to create a roadmap on greenhouse gas emission reduction in the Southeast Asian nation, state media reported. The project aims to help Vietnam realize its targets in the Paris Agreement’s nationally determined contributions (NDC). The MoNRE and the JICA will join hands to build policies and legal documents outlining plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in 2020-2030. The project will be carried out from 2019 to 2020 with the capital provided by the JICA while the MoNRE’s Climate Change Department will arrange human resources and material infrastructure. According to a government decree on roadmap and measures for greenhouse gas reduction in Vietnam, the country targets to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by 6.6% by 2025, or about 40 million tons of CO2 compared with business-as-usual (BAU). By 2030, reduction should reach at least 8%, or about 62.8 million tons of CO2 compared with the BAU. (Vietnam Plus, Vietnam Plus, nangluongsachvietnam)
