Mekong Delta to Carry out WB-funded $210M Irrigation Project

The Mekong Delta, the largest growing areas of rice, aquaculture and fruits in Vietnam, will carry out a $210 million irrigation project, $160 million will come from the World Bank on the form of official development assistance. The project targets to improve an irrigation system which benefits 120,000 hectares of agriculture and aquaculture in the region, Thoi Bao Ngan Hang newspaper reported. The project will also target to restore and improve some canals, bridges and transport system in rural areas and enhance water access to 80,000 householders in the region. Once upgraded, the irrigation system in the Mekong Delta will prevent sea water intrusion in provinces An Giang, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang and Can Tho.
