Rare Monkey to Be Rescued Soon: ENV

Education for Nature-Vietnam (ENV) will team up with forest range department in Tuyen Quang Province to inspect and rescue as soon as possible a rare monkey that is being raised illegally. An ENV representative said the organisation received the information from a tourist who called the wildlife protection hotline this morning. The monkey is reportedly being raised by Dang Tai Thanh who lives in Son Phu Commune, in Tuyen Quang Province's Na Hang District, and has been put on sale for VND3 million ($138). The owner claimed to have trapped the monkey in a forest that is 200m from the Tat Ke Ban Bung Protected Area. The animal has been raised in captivity since the beginning of 2014 for commercial purposes. The hunting and raising of the monkey violates the law, as according to Decree 32/2006/ND-CP, the commercial exploitation of the rare species group to which the monkey belongs is restricted, the ENV representative said. The representative urged relevant agencies to take measures to rescue the monkey soon. (Vietnamnet.vn Apr 17)
