Typhoon Kujira Leaves 7 Dead, 4 Missing in Vietnam

At least seven people died, four got injured and four others went missing after tropical storm Kujira swept northern Vietnam on June 23-24, state media reported Thursday. The victims are located in from the northern city of Haiphong, the northern province of Quang Ninh and Son La, where the typhoon headed from the East Sea with winds reaching 88 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts up to 149 kph. Kujira strengthened before hitting the mainland and caused heavy rain in the northern provinces of Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, and Hanoi. The downpours led to flash flood in Son La, killing dozens of cattle, damaging tens of houses and saturating many parts of the locality city in water. Tran Viet Phuong from Son La’s Flood Control Committee said that many areas remain isolated for two days. In Haiphong, the storm caused injuries to several people and damaged boats and crops after the storm reached the city from Bach Long Vi and Cat Hai islands. The storm dispersed on June 25.
