UNDP Representative Suggests Vietnam Take 4 Solutions to Poverty Eradication

United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative in Vietnam Caitlin Wiesen has pointed out four measures for poverty elimination as the country, by the end of this year, will have concluded the national program on sustainably eradicating poverty in 2016-2020, state media reported. Firstly, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has potentially worsened poverty in Vietnam, forcing residents to change livelihood methods. Therefore, it is important to take into account such changes during the compilation of the program amid the new normalcy. Secondly, the national program should create an ecosystem with a wider space for initiatives in localities, the UNDP official said, stressing a great latency of reform by localities. Thirdly, the program had better cover measures for the encouragement of accountability in achieving positive outcomes. Lastly, Vietnam need accumulate experiences from localities, thus facilitating relevant sides to share about piloted initiatives. Amid the pandemic, the UNDP is helping Vietnam reform and digitize society-backing system, including design and implementation of social welfare policies for the poor and COVID-19-hit enterprises.
