U.S. Assistant Secretary for Education Visits Vietnam to Promote ‘English for All’

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Maureen Ryan arrived in Vietnam on Sept.9 for a two-day working visit in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. She was here to promote the English for All program that was launched by President Barack Obama at a Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) town-hall meeting in Laos on Sept.7. The program will deploy more language teachers in Southeast Asian countries and bring local educators to the U.S. for training. She told Vietnamese newswire Zing that the program works with both teachers and students to help learners develop their English capacity as well as understand the U.S. and develop critical thinking. Ms. Ryan was also scheduled to meet with key members of the Fulbright University Vietnam. (Zing News Sept 9, VietnamVN Sept 9)
