USAID Funds Vietnam $14M for Urban Energy Security Project

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a new project promoting urban energy security in Vietnam at an event on November 1 that was attended by both USAID and Vietnamese officials. Presented at the event were USAID Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick, USAID/Vietnam Mission Director Michael Greene, leaders of the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT)’s Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority, and Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Industry and Trade. Ms. Glick was on her visit to Vietnam on October 30 to November 2. The four-year USAID Vietnam Urban Energy Security (2019-2023) will provide $14 million in non-refundable aid that will promote deployment of advanced, distributed energy solutions in select urban areas in Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City. The project will address Vietnam’s rapidly growing energy demand and air pollution in urban areas by working with city governments and creating business opportunities for entrepreneurs. It will support deployment of advanced distributed energy solutions such as household rooftop solar technology, next generation battery storage technology, and cleaner forms of transportation. USAID also donated PLEXOS and associated software to the Ministry of Industry and Trade at the event.
