Vietnam’s Losses by Natural Disasters Drop 73.8% y/y to $153.3M in Jan-Oct

Vietnam is estimated to have recorded an economic loss of nearly VND3.68 trillion ($153.3 million) due to natural disasters in the first ten months of this year, down 73.8% y/y, according to the latest data from the General Statistics Office (GSO).

Natural disasters are estimated to have caused 136 deaths/missing and injured 130 people while damaging 148,100 hectares of paddy and veggies; 63,200 poultry and cattle; and more than 21,400 houses, the GSO said.

In January-October, Vietnam is likely to have logged 1,639 cases of fires and explosions, which claimed the lives of 139 people and injured 119 others, causing an economic loss of nearly VND229.7 billion, down 59.5% y/y.

Besides, relevant agencies have detected 14,897 environmental violations and handled 13,293 of them, with total fines of nearly VND243.9 billion, up 9.6% y/y.
