Vietnam Advances $134M of Formosa’s Compensation to Localities

Vietnam authorities have advanced VND3 trillion (around $134 million) out of $500 million in the compensation Formosa paid for its pollution in central region to four provinces affected by the event, state media reported citing representative of the Ministry of Finance on Oct 11. Of the total amount, Quang Binh received VND1.1 trillion, Ha Tinh received VND1 trillion, Quang Tri received VND500 billion, and Thua Thien – Hue received VND400 billion. The money will be given out to farmers and fishermen affected by the incident. The money is equal to half of the compensation local people will receive. Meanwhile, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has also deposited another $150 million from Formosa’s payment to State Treasury. (Nguoi Lao Dong – Laborer Oct 11, VietnamNet Oct 11)
