Vietnam, ASEAN Hold Online Conference on Work-based Learning

The Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) last week held a virtual meeting with ASEAN countries on building the learning programs based on employment to narrow the skills gap between reality and socio-economic development requirements, state media reported. The conference featured representatives of education ministries of ten ASEAN countries, embassies of ASEAN countries, UNESCO, and the Vietnamese Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs (MoLISA). In his speech, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc addressed the importance of building and developing human resources, notably the high-quality human resources in the region. The opinions of participants will be the basis to create work-based learning, focusing on the fields of science and technology, engineering, mathematics, accounting, and tourism, he said. Participants from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Thailand also shared experiences in implementing work-based training programs from global outreach, developing vocational training, and handling the employment issue through promoting the model of schools cooperating with enterprises. On the occasion, representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat issued the initial ideas and the draft of the action plan in the period of 2020-2026 as well as emphasized the importance of Information Technology (IT) and the lifelong learning culture in the ASEAN region.
