Vietnam Ca Mau Seeks $60M from State Budget for Natural Disaster Response

Vietnam’s southernmost province of Cau Mau is seeking an allocation of VND1.4 trillion ($60.08 million) from the state budget to evacuate locals at areas vulnerable to natural disasters in 2016-2020, with a vision to 2025, state media reported. The province at first wants VND140 billion to carry out four urgent projects on resettlement infrastructure and evacuate 646 households living in the disasters-prone areas. The provincial People’s Committee had reported these projects to the National Assembly, the prime minister, and centrally-run ministries and agencies. In early August, natural disasters such as downpours, floods, and high tides caused the province a total loss of VND32 billion.
