Vietnam, Canada Boost Cooperation in Climate Change Response, Renewables

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha received Canadian Ambassador for Climate Change Catherine Stewart and Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Shawn Perry Steil in Hanoi on March 14 to promote cooperation between the two countries in climate change response and renewable energy development, local media said.

Mr. Ha proposed Canada share experience, methods, and pricing tools to support Vietnam in building a carbon market.

Regarding renewable energy development, the Vietnamese official noted that Vietnam needs assistance in considering scientific arguments, techniques, technologies, and human resources to solve problems. He hoped that investors would propose ideas, build specific projects, and consider legal issues to help Vietnam develop national mechanisms and policies for the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) implementation.

For her part, Ms. Stewart stated that Canada considers its partnership with Vietnam in JETP deployment as a model to further foster cooperation in environment and climate change. She also wished to contribute solutions to Vietnam’s renewable energy development plan, especially regarding opportunities for the private sector.

Besides, Ms. Stewart suggested Vietnam support Canada to reach an agreement on reducing marine waste, particularly plastic waste.

On the same day, the Canadian diplomat met with Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien to discuss cooperation issues related to climate change. The Vietnamese side sought Canada’s aid in flood prevention, forest fire prevention, and biodiversity in the livestock, fisheries, and forestry fields as well as plant and animal varieties selection to adapt to climate change.
