Vietnam Central Province Quang Nam Shaken by Earthquake

A minor earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale hit the reservoir of the Song Tranh Hydropower Plant in the mountainous district of Bac Tra My in the central province of Quang Nam on July 10. An official from the district's People's Committee said the quake had not caused any damage. According to Hanoi-based Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Geophysics, the epicenter of the quake was at a depth of 6.8km from the plant's reservoir. This is the third quake in the district this year. According to Ho Ngoc Thieu from the district's People's Committee, the hydropower plant was operating safely with one turbine. In 2012, a series of tremors in the area struck close to the reservoir. The biggest quake to be recorded so far was 4.7 magnitude on the Richter scale in 2012. (Vietnam News July 13)
