Vietnam Hanoi Hospital Completes 8 Organ Transplants in 24 Hours

Viet Duc Hospital in Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi achieved a remarkable feat as 100 doctors conducted two major organ transplant surgeries within a 24-hour period, utilizing organs from two brain-dead donors to save eight patients, local media reported.

The donors, both men aged 25 and 32, succumbed to severe traumatic brain injuries after traffic accidents. The families agreed to donate their organs, leading to the retrieval of 27 organs and tissues.

At the hospital, the surgeries included heart, liver, and kidney transplants, with six operating rooms simultaneously active for organ transplantation.

Meanwhile, two corneas and one liver were transferred to the Central Military Hospital 108 while two corneas to the Central Eye Hospital for suitable recipients. Other tissues and organs are being preserved in the bank for future transplants.

All transplant procedures were successful, and the patients are in stable condition, said Duong Duc Hung, director of Viet Duc Hospital.

Associate Professor Dong Van He, director of the National Coordinating Center for Organ Transplantation, said since 2010, Viet Duc hospital has performed 59 heart transplants, 88 liver transplants, 185 kidney transplants, and many other tissue transplants.

Viet Duc Hospital leads the country in organ and tissue retrieval and transplantation from brain-dead donors, contributing to 70% of the 154 brain-dead donors in the country.

Over the past three decades, Vietnam has performed over 8,000 transplant cases, with 10% involving brain-dead donors.
