Vietnam Hanoi Reports First Japanese Encephalitis Case in 2024

The Department of Health in Vietnam’s Hanoi announced the first case of Japanese encephalitis in the city this year, local media reported.

The patient, a 12-year-old boy from the northern province of Phuc Tho, began showing symptoms on May 31, including high fever and headache. By June 1, he developed neck stiffness and unsteady walking.

On June 2, he was admitted to the National Children's Hospital in Hanoi, where a Mac-ELISA test confirmed Japanese encephalitis. The boy had previously received four doses of the Japanese encephalitis vaccine, with the last dose on June 15, 2019.
