Vietnam Has 1.2K Degraded Reservoirs, Including 200 Severely Damaged Ones

Vietnam now has 1,200 impaired reservoirs, comprising 200 critically damaged ones, according to the Directorate of Water Resources, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). Since 2010, the country has witnessed 70 dam and reservoir failures, with the most recent case being Dam Thin dam breach in northern Phu Tho province on May 28. Meanwhile, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that by end-2020, between 11 and 13 storms and tropical depressions may hit the East Sea, of which five or six typhoons are forecast to make landfall. Facing the situation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) requested all dam-owning localities to regularly review and evaluate constructions as well as upgrade and repair reservoirs for safety insurance.
