Vietnam Has Huge Potential to Become Biomedical Hub in Region: Expert

Vietnam has significant potential to become a specialized biomedical center in the region with strong investment from the government, said Dr. Nguyen Chi Long from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Long, who was honored as a Scholar in Training by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) at the AACR Annual Meeting 2023 in Orlando, Florida, rated that Vietnam has the human resources to set up advanced biotechnology centers as its population is young and eager for learning, and has robust scientific knowledge imparted through the education system.

He emphasized the importance of investing in the higher education system, particularly in the field of high technology. Standardizing the quality of graduate programs in Vietnam and establishing centers or systems for research output are also crucial steps, he added.

By mastering high technology in biomedicine, Vietnam can gain more autonomy in technology and address future health challenges, he believed, calling for an open mechanism and clear legal frameworks for Vietnamese businesses to collaborate with and support research institutes.
